Peak 2: Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa
Mt. Kilimanjaro Summit
Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho-Lava Route (Highest Point in Africa 5,895 m)

From Mount Elbrus we traveled back to London on June 10th and met my mom and twin sister Kaylee to fly to Nairobi, Kenya with a short connecting flight to Kilimanjaro. There we met the Tusker Trail team to begin our climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point on the African Continent (19,335 ft).

We climbed to the summit via a longer and less traveled trail called the Lemosho-Lava Tower Route . You can read about the detailed itinerary and learn more on Tusker's great website. See you at the top.

Mount Kilimanjaro

The highest point on Kilimanjaro is Uhuru Peak, on the volcano Kibo 5,895 metres (19,341 ft). The top of Kibo is a 1.5 mile wide crater. As the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak is one of the Seven Summits.
The summit was first reached by the Marangu army scout Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo,German Hans Meyer and Austrian Ludwig Purtscheller, on October 6, 1889.
Due to Kilimanjaro's equatorial location and high elevation, almost every climate type on earth is represented, including a year-round snow-topped summit. (source Wikipedia)

Summit and World Record

June 20, 2008

Congratulations to Kaylee Moniz who now holds the world record for being the youngest woman to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro! What an accomplishment! We are so proud of Kaylee!

At approximately 12:00 p.m. (local time), Matt, Kaylee, Mike, Dee, Jennifer and Angelo summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. The team reached the summit in 6 hours - much faster than originally planned. They spent 45 minutes on the pivot (hopefully taking lots of pictures!) and then cruised back to Barafu camp in 2 hours.

The final hike to the summit was made easier by Tusker's porters and guides singing native African folk songs. The rhythmic music made everyone feel a part of a Paul Simon video. Having a beat can really keep the feet moving!

The team decided not to camp at High Crater camp due to the deteriorating weather. At 18,810 feet, it's difficult to sleep and eat and this was not the day to take that chance. Tomorrow the team will hike back to Millennium camp where they will rest a bit before continuing to explore Africa.

Congratulations!
